In which I possibly steal a bike
Something interesting about Brussels is the à donner culture. This is when people put their unneeded items outside for passerby to take, first come first serve. It is nice because there's obviously a generalized agreement here that things may be useful to someone else, even if you don't need or want them anymore, sort of in line with how popular brocantes are. I've heard from my colleagues that my neighborhood is a good one for à donner because it is more wealthy and thus nicer things get left out. Usually it looks like this, something on the sidewalk with a sign:

Miles came home saying that there was a bicycle à donner right up the block. This particular neighbor has been a donnering all weekend long, so chances were good that this bike was indeed intended as a giveaway. Like everything else cher madame has been giving away, it was in perfect condition, just 20+ years old. But a whole bike? It seemed too good to be true. Maybe it was just left outside the house coincidentally? There was no à donner sign, but then again, nothing else she left out so far had one either. It had a basket, a back rack, and a very pink color. I would put Waffle in the basket and take him for rides. I would ignore the color. Miles pointed out it had very flat tires and lots of cobwebs on the spokes. We took it home but I did leave a note, just in case bicycle thief, c'est moi.
